Has anyone purchased a Sony NEX camera?
« on: July 18, 2010, 06:48:29 PM »
I used to hate the way that they looked, but I've taken a new liking to the NEX5, the smaller version of the two. Although the kit lens still looks a bit ridiculous on it, the 16mm prime lens looks amazing on it.

I love the NEX.  I don't feel the love at $600 though.  I was waiting for the price to drop and then found a E-P1 for $250.  Couldn't pass it up.  I'll wait for the refresh cycle and for Sony to clear out the NEX.  They usually do it for half price.

Checkout the "NEX" camcorder.  It looks like something out of a Sci Fi movie.  It's amazing.

Where'd you find an E-P1 for $250!?

I'm trying to buy another one, would snap it up instantly for that price.

I agree the NEX is a bit overpriced at the moment.

I will not buy an unstabilized body! No matter Sony. Pany, Cano-nikon, whichever.

That is a bit of a downside, especially considering the 16mm has no stabilization.

You don't really need stabilization on a wideangle. You do need one on telephoto lenses. And considering the current pricing, there is going to be a long wait before long, fast, stabilized lenses become available. E-Px are still the the only EVIL cameras with in-body IS.

True, but it would still be nice to have.

I think Sony are trying to play the Cano-nikon game with IS lenses, thus trying to rip off their customers for every lens they sell. Let us see if it works in, say, one year.

Since my main camera is a Nikon DSLR, I keep waiting on them....If no news in a few months, then I might get a NEX...

I don't think that's the reason.  Size is the reason.  They wanted to make the smallest body possible and IS adds volume.  The NEX body is super small.  It is the size of a P&S.  Other than the bulge where the batteries go, it's about the size of a TX series.

Travfar,
You're exactly correct as to why the NEX cameras don't have in-body image stabilization

Yes, the body is now indeed small, but the lens is even bigger, to the point that it is much bigger than the body. And let us see again in a while, but I believe that these lenses will remain more expensive than the Oly counterparts, and that's not because of increased production costs.

Wow! That sounds like a good deal. For the kit I'm assuming?

One of the reviews pointed out that the NEX with 16mm kit lens isn't doing their newbie users any favours: 16mm corresponds to a 24mm lens. Think of it--24mm as your primary lens? Imagine the exaggerated noses when you attempt a portrait shot. Or the lack of the shallow depth of field so sought after by SLR buyers. Curious choice indeed.

Is the deal still up there?

Centauri - I think most people are going to go with the kit that have no experience.

One of the nice things about belonging to a Nikon forum is that I get impartial views of both NEX and PEN cameras by Nikon owners wishing to add a more portable camera to their collection.... 8)

Nope.  It went from last night to this morning.  It was part of the last hurray from Bill.
