The sought after PEN EVF - What quality does it need to be?
« on: August 13, 2010, 04:15:54 PM »
Given the design of the next PEN, an EVF might be possible, but the question remains to what quality of that EVF people will be happy with. If it's a small viewfinder like on the Canon G series cameras, would that be too small? If it stuck out like the one on the Panasonic G1 would it be too big? What size is the right size?

 Better than Panasonic! ;D
Want as good as the external evf or better ( quite a few think the present Oly evf isn't that good).

 thanks

On the way to look at an E-P1l bought an E1.  :o

Is it possible to put something like that in there?

Depends on Olympus' thinking....
An internal one make this camera their new "top of the line" model.....

If they're looking to replace the E-PL1, then perhaps an internal one isn't needed.....

A nice enhancement for the E-PL1 would be a better quality lcd screen. That shouldn't take anymore room.

More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

the quality of the current panny VF (the million dot whatever) is fine, I really doubt the resolution will go up. What I really want to see is better refresh rates in low light, if the VF can't keep up with whats going on in the scene, it's basically useless. Also the size should be kinda big, at least almost as big as on the pannys, even if it does add a bulge.

Can you precisely focus a MF legacy lens without zooming the EVF? I heard that Oly's EVF is superior to Pany, but if Pany works for legacy lenses, I might just close my eyes and get a Pany camera, especially after the $900 F/6.7 flop.

I'd love more resolution in the VF, but I just dont see it happening in the next bunch of cameras. Faster refresh rates seems like an reasonable request.

I keep hearing a lot of bad things about the Olympus EVF, despite it having very good quality. I'm not really sure I'd want a built in EVF.

There's a contradiction surely?

In reasonable sunlight with a well lit subject I would say yes.

There is what I would describe as a moire effect when you hit sharp focus - like two grids overlapping. This effect is less reliable (or noticeable) in low light though which is when I usually revert to the magnifier. Either way I've found EVF more useful than the dreaded LCD. Most annoying thing with the latter are the reflections of myself when I'm shooting into the light - particularly if I've been daft enough to wear a white T shirt...

(edited to correct wrong word - I meant moire not fresnel)

Not necessarily, the good quality refers to the over a million pixels in it, but it also is a victim of the rainbow effect.

Starting to get nervous. My whole reason for buying a Pen is to use all the orphaned manual focus lenses sitting around. Knew the lcd would be tough, so planned on the evf. Heard how good this evf was supposed to be. Many claim it matches or exceeds an ovf. Now people are saying its tough to mf with the evf, without magnification. Arghhh.  :-\

Are these cameras able to reliably manual focus lenses with lcd or evf minus magnification? Have no problem focusing with the ovf on the Pentax k-7/20D or Olympus E1/30. Even the K-x is fairly decent. Are the M4/3s comparable or not?
thanks

. . . I don't have the VF-2 yet and would like to know more about this rainbow effect. Care to explain?

You will essentially see all of the colors of the rainbow through your viewfinder if you move it quickly while you are shooting, because the EVF does not have enough time to refresh the scene. It's apparent in all EVFs but a lot more prevalent in some.

So this problem doesn't exist if you're not moving the camera while composing and then shooting?

No, it's simply because of the refresh rate not being fast enough for things like focus tracking for a moving subject.

Thanks. This doesn't seem to be a real concern for most of the photos that I take.
