I know I will sound like a "noob" for asking this, but the only reason I am asking this is for portability and "wowwing" while outside.

Basically what I am asking is, is there any way to take the post process filters from the E-P2 and stick them on the E-P1 firmware? I REALLY want that Diorama and CrossProcess...

So far no. Check out Olympus Master. I think it can apply these filters.

I really just wanted them on the camera body. I can reproduce those effects in Photoshop/Lightroom, but just the fact that I could have that on the go would be great.

Let us start working on the reverse engineering then!

I'm not sure about Olympus Master but I know that these two filters are in the new Olympus Viewer 2. But keep in mind you can only apply them to RAW files.

Okay, thanks a lot. Now, could someone explain to me how exactly to get the firmware for the camera so that I can try to start hacking something?

Read this thread:

And please remember that you're on your own if you brick your camera.

I do know indeed that if I brick it, I am at risk on my own... I didn't say that I would exactly put my custom firmware onto my camera, but... Hmm, if possible, since the software emulates the camera as if it was actually installed onto the computer (which downloads directly into the camera via emulator/actual connection,) would mean that it would be possible to emulate the camera through the PC as well... Obviously I am not saying I would or could create such a possibility, but who knows! I would like to just mess with it for now. If it were simple codes such as a file name per filter, what if I were to import such a thing to the camera... Would it create a bricked firmware? I MIGHT possibly try such a thing, but I have to see first.

Generally there is no emulator. You have to upload it in order to see if it works. There are no separate files for filters though.

Oh darn. Would you mind explaining what type of file system/files are in the actual firmware? Or is it like a chunk?

The files you will see when you download the firmware for hacking are actually images (not pictures, but more like snapshots) of memory regions. When uploaded in the camera, they cease to exist as files, but are rather recorded in the program memory for later execution. They are machine code (binary) programs, which makes reverse engineering really difficult.
That's all just theory so far, I haven't tried that yet myself.

Eee... Very bad experiences with bin files when trying to extract data from softwares... I will leave that stuff to the pros! Thanks.

Hey guys, let anyone who can give a helping hand to the effort.
There is even a bounty promised for hacked firmware:

I would like a distance readout on the display, for manual focusing in total darkness. It doesn’t have to be to the millimetre, the nearest predicted centimetre will suffice.

Alternatively (or additionally) I’d like a focus “shot box” feature where I can use one of the dials, or perhaps even the focus ring, to jump from a series of presettable distances — for example: 75cm, 1.5m, 3m, 5m, 7m, ∞. That would get me through a considerable amount of my out-and-about candid shooting.
I'd pay good money for something like that.
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

In addtion to shutter half-press to exit magnification mode, it would be nice to be able to assign magnification to one of the customizable buttons (FN or the left button)

Hi -

I just have one simple wish: to switch the Bayesian filters off and give me a straight RAW dump of all sensor values with the color filtration turned off for a panchromatic B&W image of 36MP (12*3 = 36).

After all, we all have these wonderful 36MP sensors and the Beyesian filtering reduces it to 12MP because of the need to have color. For the advanced resolution, I'd be happy to live without color...

JohnF, there are only 12MP (or whatever) detectors. They're set to different colours, but there are only 12M of them of any colour. Removing the bayer filter just gives you 12MP panchromic. If anything, I consider the nominal bayer MP count to be a marketing con trick, but since everyone does it, no one gets an advantage.
Cameras big and small: Sony HX9V, Olympus E-P1, Canon 300D (IR mod), 7D and many others!

Hi -

@popo: I went and checked: you're right. And it's Bayer interpolation, not Bayesian (I'm an economist, where Bayesian analysis is part of our bread and butter work...).

For the possible edification of others: there are 12 MP of sensors. These are under a Bayer filter of RGB, with 50% green, 25% blue and 25% red, based on human perception. These individual data points, 12 million in total for a 12MP sensor, are of course, in raw form only partial (i.e. there are 6m green, 3m blue and 3m red data points) and these are recalculated to form 12m 3-color data points by a mathematical process (actually series of processes) called demosaicing, where all sort of magic happens.

Then let me rephrase: demosaic differently so that I can get "more" monochrome pixels. Given the color information that could be remapped to spatial data, interpolate inbetween data points so that I can get, say, 2.5 times the number of pixels. :-)

Or exactly 12million points with no loss of detail due to interpolation.

Wouldn't that be a simple matter of RAW processing, not something changed on the camera itself? There are already color filters per sensor pixel I think, but with the right software you could manipulate the RAW file differently.

EDIT- Here is a good thread with some info-

I want to be able to turn the histogram on and off with a single button. Also, I want to be able to program the +/- exposure button. This sits in a real prominent position and I never use it 'cos I use A or S with one of the dials set for exposure comp. What a waste of a button!

Hopefully, someone is paying attention...

I've been trying to use my Leica lenses on the E-P2, and it's so frustrating.... Frankly, they could have tried to make the E-P2 work well with Leica lenses. They could have tried....

Some of these are such simple fixes...
- Allow the Fn button to flip between zoomed/unzoomed view for focusing
- Allow a reduced the zoomed view to the center of the screen, instead of using the whole screen
- Allow the menu functions to work with the zoom viewer! This drives me nuts! I can't access any menu items, or see the histogram view, with the zoom viewer on! It's crazy!
- The display should turn off to save power, even with the VF-2! I ran out of battery in cold weather.

For the 4/3 AF lenses:
- Show a depth-of-field scale on screen, so I can prefocus with depth-of-field

Indeed. Now we need to find programmers with experience in reverse-engineering embedded systems, and convince them to work for free.
