Hacked firmware - what changes do you want?
« on: July 05, 2010, 06:12:18 AM »
If you got your hands on a hacked firmware for the Olympus Pen E-P1, P2 or PL1 - what changes would you like to see in it? I have read that the firmware for P1 is in the open but nothing yet to download and try with changes.

Only thing I can think of right now is the possibility of secret text embedded in the EXIF-data. That would be awesome for me.

I would like to have access to every aspect of the functioning of the camera through an in camera scripting language. Imagine what that would give you!

I'd give the menu system a makeover for starters. Better bracketing options, built in time lapse mode could be fun.
Cameras big and small: Sony HX9V, Olympus E-P1, Canon 300D (IR mod), 7D and many others!

Apps for the camera, that allow it to become whatever we need it for.  I would like to be able to customize all the filters at all levels, and create new 'art filters', and add frames such as polaroid and image transfer etc etc.  I have an Android mobile phone camera app that does this brilliantly (Vignette for Android), that costs £2.99 to download (theres even a free version thats slightly limited, but not much), so it would seem the next step that proper cameras would be able to do the same, before we all desert them for other types of imaging devices that offer such flexibility.

I've been waiting for CDHK to pick up the PEN cameras for it's great hacking abilities, unfortunately they never have.

That being said I can't quite think of something that bothered me enough with my PEN to want to change it, other than the above mentioned menus.

I’d prefer it if Apple could design the user interface, instead of Olympus. Wouldn’t it be a good world if companies could do this — capitalise on their core competencies and not let their core idiocies get in their way. Olympus design the E-P1 hardware and optics, hand it over to Apple, to expertly do the soft user interface that makes sense to expert humans. Both sets of branding appear on the product.

You'll need more than software to do that.

Better frame and data rates on video like they did with the GH1 and the GF1.

Thanks for the info. I thought about one of these last year but the technology at that time was fledgling. Looks like they are making advances now though. Even so,  I am still in turmoil giving up my SanDisk Extreme 30MB/s card, it performs faster than any card I've ever used in any camera.

Don't give it up. I've read quite some reviews about that eye-fi and it is not what you want. It is both slow, as a storage media, and as a wireless transfer, it has very low signal reception and limited range, and it can only transfer jpegs with size up to 900k, if I remembered correctly.  And you need a program, installed on a PC, which is in the same wifi network.

All Eye-Fi cards are Class 6 and supports sending both JPEG and RAW wireless. Hence no issue with speeds and no image sizelimit (video to 2 GB or less). Read about this on the official site, I find these cards very appealing.

If the eye-fis are Class6, then the anDisk Extreme 30MB/s is supposed to be class 30, if such existed as a standard. I must have read an old review then, if what you are saying is true. I don't yet see the higher price and lower performance justified. At the end of the day, what lorenski asked for:

would not be possible yet, because a computer must be involved, which could otherwise just copy the files from one card to another.

Totally agree with you on the wireless sending to a phone from a camera. Not possible...yet. Fastest performing cards today are Class 10 and 80Mbit/s (10 MB/s) so 30 MB/s are still somewhere in the future :)

how about using a micro sd via sd adapter in the camera and then using the micro sd in the phone?

not the fastest card in the pack , but i think this might work

Sounds plausible. I have an 8GB microSD, which came with my Nokia 5800 cellphone, but no micro-to-SD adapter around. I am afraid however that that card will perform something like class2 or cass4 the most.

I would like the option to take 5 shots at 1EV differences.

I would also like ISO50 and even ISO25. I wouldn't expect any less noise or dynamic range but it would be useful getting extended shutter speeds and reduce the need for stacked ND filters.
Be nice to each other, life is too short for anything else.

It depends.. Is the limitation of the shutter speed Hardware or Software?

I'd just like the shutter speed to be the same in my E-PL1 as it is in the other Pens.

I agree!

I want the E-PL2 to have a 1/4000th top shutter speed.

I don't know about using the micro to get pics on your cell.. However, I found myself with a new camera today and no Flash card of any kind. So I stole my husband's adapter and the micro from my cell.. and will be using that until my SDHC comes in.

Good to see there are both tools for the job and an official firmware to work with. That should get people started and going.
