EP-1 or E-PL1
« on: September 07, 2010, 07:30:59 AM »
Hello,

I am a proud and happy owner of a EP1 but I've been offered a EPL-1 for a very very cheap price that is making me doubt about if I should switch to the second one, as it offers some features like EVF and Flash that the EP-1 doesn't

What would you recommend?

Cheers!

I would strongly suggest you to go for E-PL1. The flash is nice to save you in some situations, and apparently the EVF is amazing...

One thing that is really stopping me after checking a few reviews is the EPL-1 doesn't have dials, I dunno if I could live without the two dials for changing settings...

I would say that one major decision point rests upon whether or not you want a built-in flash.....

Rethinking this,
If I had a chance to do it all over again, I'd get the E-P2 package with the VF-2 viewfinder.....

Yup, built in flash and viewfinder, plus the dials....  two against one...

I think I will wait untill Photokina, to see what happens, if something new comes up prices might go down, if no, I might get it as it is quite cheap and have two bodies and sell the old one in the future. I need to give it some thinking.

Cheers for the help!

Lucky you! If it's cheap enough, I'd consider keeping the E-PL1 as a spare body. Other pros and cons to consider; don't know if these are relevant to you:
  • E-P1 records videos in stereo; E-PL1 in mono only
  • E-P1 max shutter speed 1/4000s; E-PL1 is 1/2000
  • IS in the E-PL1 is "not quite as sophisticated" as the one in the E-P1 (3 stops vs. 4 stops)
  • E-P1 viewfinder is 3"; E-PL1 is 2.7" (the 0.3" difference is noticeable)

That smaller viewfinder actually made quite a difference when I played with an E-PL1 and remembered how big my E-P1 viewfinder was.

Good point about the E-PL1's 1/2000 shutter speed....
