I am afraid it's just a toy with a minmal 3D effect. The two lenses are way too close to each other. The base needs to be at least 70mm, like that of the human eyes...

In addition to my previous post:

Panasonic might bring out a second device that increases the base distance of the two lenses. Much like the prisms in binoculars that you put in front of your eyes. If this is the case, I will take back my "toy" opinion.

I was wondering about that, but the lens essentially splits the sensor in half in which lens it goes through, doesn't it?

Yes, the lenses produce two independant images on the left and right halves of the sensor. The prism device must be put in front of the lenses (like a hood or filter) and will then increase their base (which in turn will increase the difference between the two images for a better 3D effect).

You will need a greater base at longer distances to see a 3D effect. That's why prisms are used in binoculars. They create a greater base for the front lenses than the base of your eyes.

It appears this thread is referring to two different items...voyager's link is to a 3D consumer camcorder by Panasonic; Ian's is to a new 3D lens from Panasonic.

I'm not totally sure whether the lens is for m4/3--the dpreview article doesn't specifically mention it, though it does say it's for "Lumix G Micro System", which implies m4/3.

The device looks interesting, but I'm very bearish about 3D right now, even though I'm a tech geek. I say it's too fast, too soon, too expensive. It's the industry trying to foist something onto the consumer. I have no intention of upgrading my Viera plasma to the new "3D" version any time soon, nor shell out money for a 3D Blu-ray, or 3D glasses at $150 a pop....

I meant to link to the lens, it was released along with the camcorder. It seems Panasonic may have switched something around.
