Now THIS really stings!
« on: September 03, 2010, 12:32:57 PM »
Hot on the heels of the group gripe session over Olympus' overpriced $900 75-300, I just saw an ad in our local papers for a Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6 Canon mount zoom..for $189!! And this despite the Sigma lens needing larger optics to cover the APS-C sensor.

Man, Olympus is really taking its customers for granted, or somebody fell asleep at the switch. Badly.

Does that Sigma have the internal High Speed Motor ? (HSM)

Don't know--probably not at that price point. It does have macro though. The HSM and the aspherical elements are about the only thing going for the Oly 75-300 to (feebly) attempt to justify its price...

The Sigma 70-300 and similar Tamron are budget lenses in quality and price.

I really do think Oly have optimised their 75-300 for movie performance, even if that brings little to still usage.

I agree, that would seem to be the case. But if so, it's a curious move, as a 75-300 range isn't that well suited for videos in general (unless you're into sports or wildlife). Olympus has their more sanely-priced and flexible 14-150 for videographers.

NOTHING WILL JUSTIFY THE PRICE FOR ME .... band h has the canon 75-300
af lens for....$ 159 US funds these are big lenses , i know redesigns cost money
and they need to recoup costs, but the price fpr such a slow lens w only cause mistrust toward olympus and breed suspicion about it pricing model for all its product, it has for me

i have been an avid supporter of olympus , but enough is enough , im discusted  now

The Sigma lens is crap, to put it frankly. Also depends on if it's the APO version or not.

Wow... $159 for a Canon 75-300? That says it all. The Oly 75-300 would be overpriced even at half its current price.

The Canon 75-300 is an old lens and not considered to be good by modern standards. And they also recently went for the opposite extreme with the 70-300L at erm... let's just say it's at least 4 figures whatever the major currency you use!

The Canon 75-300mm wasn't considered good by old standards. One of their worst lenses.

Not to rub it in or anything but I purchased a sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 SLD DG lens for $150 brand new, Nikon Mount. It's been nothing but quality results.

It's absolutely bullshit that olympus would charge that much for such a shit lens.

Isn't that Sigma's newest version of the lens?

It's a 70-300mm f/4 SLD (Super-Low Dispersion) DG (DG stands for Full Frame-compatibe) f/4 CONSTANT max. aperture. $150 vs. $900. Speechless  :-X

Anyone who buys that lens is a sucker. (or retarded)
At that price it should shoot at f/2.8 straight through.

I really hate to say it, but it appears more and more that Olympus is starting to take their m4/3 success for granted...  :(

I'm not aware of Sigma making a 70-300 f/4 constant aperture. Sure it isn't just the regular f/5.6 model? There were rumours that the 4/3 (not micro) Olympus lens was based on the Sigma 70-300 design but I can't remember where.

^ Sorry, I didn't mean for it to look like constant aperture f/4. I meant f/4-5.6 But regardless the quality of the lens I bought it stunning, especially for the price. (I fixed my original post so it's clear now) :]

For all you Sigma-dislikers, how about Tamron then? This is their new 75-300 f4-5.6 with all their goodies: built-in IS, extra-low dispersion glass, ultrasonic silent focus, for exactly half the price of the Olympus  :-\:

I would never say I dislike Sigma. I am not happy because their lenses don't function well on the PEN. These would instantly become the lenses of choice if they had quick and reliable AF on my camera body.

Brands like Sigma, Tamron, et al. are normally considered "second tier" compared to the established brands. But with some effort and innovative technology, they can be leaders. Just look at Panasonic: they were considered "second tier" camera manufacturers until m4/3 came along--now they're considered market leaders in that segment. I only wish more "second tier" lens manufacturers would join m4/3, to provide some much needed competition (and to teach Olympus a lesson or two)!

I know of some Sigma lenses (and have used some) better than even the Canon L series lenses.

Not anymore. With 4/3 and m4/3 they can actually and officially pay for the specifications and receive recognized compatibility by the consortium.
