It seems logical to not allow full-time IS in order to improve IS performance when grabbing a picture....The IS works by moving the sensor assembly in the focal plane, both left-right and up-down. If at a given point it is at its uppermost position, and the shutter release is triggered, it has two options - to start grabbing a picture straight away, or to move the sensor assembly in its original position. Option one would lower the performance of the IS, as it can not move further up, and option two would introduce an additional time lag.
In-lens IS might have different dynamics, and thus full-time IS would probably have less penalty in that case.
That's all my speculation, of course.
Those are excellent points, adash. That probably explains why my Panny TZ5 manual suggests that the "IS only when shooting" mode is slightly more effective. But that still doesn't excuse why Olympus omitted the full-time IS mode even as a non-default option. Right now, the image swims and jumps so badly at telephoto that it almost negates the ability of the PEN to let you manually focus. Hmph.

The specs say "closest focusing distance 17 cm"; if this is measured from the sensor plane, it would be very close indeed, since the lens itself is 7 cm long already. Legacy standard primes usually focused down to 60 cm.

Any sample shots taken with one of these yet?

Way out of my price range but it'd be nice to see em.

TIA

Adri

I picked up my Voigtlander Nocton 25mm f/0.95 lens on Tuesday and gave it a quick spin around the block.

Here is my first shot with it (helped by a mirror) ...

_B025017 by peterb666, on Flickr

The build quality is fabulous, focusing is very easy and precise with an almost 270 degrees rotation of the focus ring from infinity to 0.17m (less than 7").

One thing to note, and I was advised this before accepting the order, there is no electrical contact with the MFT body so lens and aperture data is NOT relayed to the camera. By looks of things, the large rear element puts paid to any chance of having electrical contacts.

I will post some images shortly.

Cheers

The standard I expected of the Voigtlander 25mm lens was similar to that delivered by the Nikon 50mm f/1.2 manual focus lens. It costs about the same (in Australia). This is the much cheaper and older f/1.2 from the Nikon range - the old 58mm f/1.2 Noct is discontinued and was always a hideously expensive lens designed to minimise ghosting and other lens features common in fast lenses designed for low light.

Well, I think it does quite well and will post some night images next week. In the meantiime, these were taken a couple of minutes before "last light" with the lens set to f/0.95, f/2.0 and f/4.0.

f/0.95 0.5 sec ISO200 - focus is on dog's eye.

_B025041 by peterb666, on Flickr

f/2.0 1.3 seconds ISO200

_B025042 by peterb666, on Flickr

f/4.0 4 seconds ISO200

I can confirm the accuracy of the close focus distance. Note that with the lens mounted, it measures 11.5cm from the sensor plane to the front of the lens hood. You would normally expect a lens like this to focus down to around 0.25m. That those extra 13.5cm in focussing distance occupy around 100 degree rotation of the focus ring. Focusing is very precise.

a bit soft at f.95 but the bokeh is beautiful.
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

Here is another shot taken f/0.95. There is very little depth of field at that setting.

Indeed, I was expecting a much more harsh "twisted" bokeh, but this lens surprised me! Congratulations, Peter.

I would have  bought  instantly if they had managed to keep it under or about half its actual length, more low light samples might convince me to do otherwise...cosmetically on the pen, I think it's protuding ridiculously and so wouldnt fit in my parka's pocket ( i'm not into  carrying "man bags" full of gear and and into  "I'm a pro Look at my lovely man bag" style..) blah,  I'll shut it now :-X

I was bored, at work and the weather was crap. Rather than go outside and get wet, I took a picture of one of Australia's national icons - Vegemite.

Vegemite by Voigtlander by peterb666, on Flickr

Taken with an Olympus E-P1 and Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95 set to f/2.0

Distance is about 0.3m and depth of field less than 1cm. Note the textured surface the jar is sitting on. I haven't quite nailed the focus on this - still getting use to such shallow depth of field.
