manual focus on any of the native af  m4\3 lenses is the nightmare , manual designed lenses are a joy to use

Couldn't agree more. In all my AF Nikkors, the focus ring is kind of loose, but on the Ai or AIS MF lenses, it works a lot better...

Hope the Nokton will be like the old ones!

I use my Nokton 50mm f/1.1 and 35mm f/1.2 on my m43 cameras a lot and it's not so bad. Manual focus with a lens built for it is nice. I've almost given up on it with my Lumix 20mm, as much as I love that lens otherwise.

Focus by wire...  :'(

That's essentially where I am coming from. Also the 25mm focal length is a lot more useful to me than 50mm or even 35mm.

I will keep the Panny 20mm lens for general use and travel for when I want AF.
Be nice to each other, life is too short for anything else.

There was a cheap one on ebay.  I was hoping it would go unnoticed.  Sadly, that is not the case.  It went from $5-$300 overnight.

Whew.  The bidders have come to their senses and the high bidder retracted his bid.   It's back down to $255 now.

I thought it was due for October but I found this

That listing says they are expecting it in October. As typical for ebay, they are taking bids on something they do not have and cannot even guarantee they will get.

Indeed. For anything other than landscapes I just see getting the focus right wide open as being a pain, especially while using the LCD which in the situation you'd need the wide open aperture, will be quite grainy.
I second that. With such shallow depth of field, accidentally focusing on someone's nose would be enough to put the eyes out of focus, enough to make the picture look slightly "fuzzy". I run into this when using my 50mm f/1.8 lens at wide open.

You are not alone, lisandra! We're with you.  :D

It's too bad the PENs can't stabilize the image on the LCD screen. Is this possible only for lens-based stabilization systems?

All my other body IS camera do show a stabilized image on the LCD.  I don't even understand how Olympus cannot do it.  The IS is on so the image they get off the sensor should be stablized.  Do they only stablize when the shutter is fired?

Yes, the PENs only stabilize when the picture is taken. I don't know why Olympus took this route--maybe their IS is not robust enough to be running all the time? This is another annoyance that we must live with.

Maybe battery life would be shorter with IS running all the time....

That's most likely one of the reasons. But they could just make it a separate IS mode, with the understanding that battery life might be shortened somewhat. (On my Panasonic TZ5, there are separate modes for "full time IS" and "only when shooting IS". Interestingly, they state that the "only when shooting" mode is slightly more effective. Perhaps that's why Olympus went this route...dunno...just grasping at straws here.)

I don't mind that minor annoyance as it has two advantages.

1. Every lens mounted on an Olympus MFT camera is stabilised including my 1953 Schneider.

2. Lenses can be more compact.

Both winners in my book and worth the minor inconvenience. The advantage of in-lnes IS is limited. I have the Panasonic 45-200 and the effect on in-bondy IS on a stable viewfinder image is negligible.

Those two things don't have anything to do with only stabilizing while taking a shot.  You can have full time IS and still have those two.  It's really only a matter of when the platform is active.  All my other body IS cameras are selectable.  You can choose to have it working all the time, great for focusing, or only when a shot is taken.  The difference for focusing is quite dramatic.  Maybe Olympus will allow for it in a future firmware upgrade.  I doubt it's a hardware limitation, only a marketing one.

It seems logical to not allow full-time IS in order to improve IS performance when grabbing a picture....The IS works by moving the sensor assembly in the focal plane, both left-right and up-down. If at a given point it is at its uppermost position, and the shutter release is triggered, it has two options - to start grabbing a picture straight away, or to move the sensor assembly in its original position. Option one would lower the performance of the IS, as it can not move further up, and option two would introduce an additional time lag.
In-lens IS might have different dynamics, and thus full-time IS would probably have less penalty in that case.
That's all my speculation, of course.
