Hm, is it a real m4/3 lens with aperture automation and AF?

I think (could be sure) that aperture and focus are manual.
You have to work in manual AV and manual focus, it's interesting for this...

I have placed on on order and should be getting one out of the first Australian shipment of 20 lenses is expected in late October.
 ;D

Link to Voigtlander site (Japanese) http://www.cosina.co.jp/seihin/voigt/v-lens/micro-ft/index.html

The specifications are:

Lens construction: 11 elements in 8 groups
Angle of view 47.3 degrees
Number of blades 10
Closest focus 17cm

Lenght 70mm
Diameter 58.4mm
Weight 410gr

Filter size 52mm

Lens hood is included.

No idea if it is auto aperture as that would require electrical contacts and and a motor to drive the diaphram which I don't think Cosina has done in any of their Voigtlander product.

The Australian pricing is considerably lower than Europe at just $895 (around $800 USD at the moment).

This works about around $400 cheaper than the 50mm f/1.1 CV Nokton and cheaper than the MF Nikon 50mm f/1.2 lens which is probably the next reasonable priced fastie. You would need to add an adapter to either of those and of course that means stop-down metering anyway.

All looks spiffing and I really love the CV lenses I have.

Just the slight price problem to get over.....

For those of us in the US, Stephen at Cameraquest is taking refundable $100 deposits now.
http://www.cameraquest.com/index.htm

He will add details as he gets them. It should sell for around $900 USD based on the early info.

He was the only Cosina/Voigtlander distributor in the US until recently and he is in direct contact with the company. I have purchased most of my rangefinder lenses from him and I can vouch that Cameraquest is a good company to do business with.

(My deposit is in!)  ;D

Wow--this will have the speed fanatics drooling for sure! At its estimated price, it's about double the price of the Panasonic 20mm, for more than double the light gathering ability. Sounds like a reasonable trade-off to me. (Not to say I'm rushing to get one any time soon....)

yes camera quest is a good company , i love the sheer amount of lens and
body info at gandys site ,

an alternative to camera quest is photovillage in ny , a great little store to visit in an old prewar broadway building , it like a little botique for leica canikon voigtlander and leica and ,[drumroll] ricoh!

i got my 3 voigtlander lenses there , and my artisan and artist strap also nice folks , and they let you mount and play with the stuff in the showcase

but ive heard nothing but good reports bout cameraquest

Manual focusing with this thing must be a nightmare.

I would think it would be a dream compared to any of the Olympus or Panasonic lenses.

1. You have a very large aperture which makes critical focussing easy.

2. You have a direct mechanical link (rather than fly by wire) between the focus ring and the focussing mechanism.

3. You should have a very brigth LCD.

4. You have hard stops at either end of the focus ring. Being able to find infinity in the dark is very handy for night-time lanscapers.

5. You have a marked focus scale with depth of field markings.

This is a lens you can focus in the dark without seeing anything on the LCD just by judging the distance and stopping down a bit.

It is a lens that will give you a half-decent chance to manually focus under other conditions.

He most probably means that DOF will be so shallow, that you will have to both stand very still and aim endlessly for acurate focus on the eyes of your subject, for example. For landscapes it will be fine, as the hyperfocal distance will be at about 44m when wide open and the helicoid stop at infinity will help alot.

Indeed. For anything other than landscapes I just see getting the focus right wide open as being a pain, especially while using the LCD which in the situation you'd need the wide open aperture, will be quite grainy.

It will not be so grainy, unless you are focusing it in a complete darkness. This lens will have a light gathering ability times beter than most SLR legacy primes and may times better than the m4/3 native lenses. It will gather eight times more light than mZD 17mm F/2.8! It will however not be as sharp when wide open.

A lens that fast is very unusual anyway and would have to be handled slightly differently than the way we handle our "ordinary" lenses. I have never seen a lens faster than F1.2 anyway, and never used anything faster than F/1.4.

I use my Nokton 50mm f/1.1 and 35mm f/1.2 on my m43 cameras a lot and it's not so bad. Manual focus with a lens built for it is nice. I've almost given up on it with my Lumix 20mm, as much as I love that lens otherwise.

Focus by wire...  :'(

manual focus on any of the native af  m4\3 lenses is the nightmare , manual designed lenses are a joy to use

I second that. With such shallow depth of field, accidentally focusing on someone's nose would be enough to put the eyes out of focus, enough to make the picture look slightly "fuzzy". I run into this when using my 50mm f/1.8 lens at wide open.
