the 14-45 is the 1st kit zoom really nicely built and optically a contender for the best kit zooom made imho ois switch machined metal mount  small size

the 14-42 is a cheaper version with a smaller front element, plastic mount and ois that is not switchable and is of course  slightly shorter in the long end
i dont know how this zoom compares with the excellent first verrsion

i belive the 14-42 is slightly longer  [ barrel  dimensions]

it's softer. capitalism sucks!
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

They realized they could make a smaller and cheaper version, so they did.

Unfortunately the quality suffers too, at far as I know.

that is a shame , panasonic should be ashamed

and yes capitalism does suck , it sucks the life out of people and apparently it now sucks the goodness out of lenses

On a related note, Olympus also made a "cheaper" version of its 14-42 kit zoom for the E-PL1 (with a plastic mount). But are both lenses the same optically?

Nobody has made any reference otherwise. Would make for an interesting test.
