I have the same lens but was getting annoyed by it so haven't used it in a while. Must give it another try.

A bit prone to flare. I do a lot of night shooting and point sources of light play havoc with it.

Note the upside-down reflections of the lights.

Works fine out of focus in an abstract way...

Sometimes it sort of works...

Not the sharpest tool in the shed...

Olympus OM 50mm f/1.4 @ f/1.4

Olympus OM 50mm f/3.5 macro @ f/3.5...

Olympus 14-42 f/3.5-5.6 @ 42mm & f/5.6

Probably not the fairest test in the world but the f/1.4 doesn’t catch up with the others when stopped down. The Olympus OM 50mm f/3.5 macro is still a pretty sharp lens compared to modern glass which is quite impressive.

All shots were taken at ISO200 but with different shutter speeds to compensate for the different f-speeds.

the glowyness on the subjects in the movie cover in the pictures make a sharpness analysis difficult, why not set up a still life with a few interesting bottles and with detailed labels, piece of fruit, books pamphlet covers, a camera,  small basket or piece of fabric, with stuff for consideration in center and at the edge.

with a variety of reflective and non reflective subjects a good assessment can be made .

the 50 1.4 olympus is good ive heard is there a finger smudge on the rear element???  curious

The lighting is idential on all 3 and it is ambient lighting - nothing direct or reflective however there are clear differences. These are not 1:1 images but reduced size (down to 1024pixel).

All lenses are clear and fingermark free. There a a couple of bits of dust in the 50mm f/1.4 but it is low by the standards of a lens of its age.

I will set up a test as suggested and do shots at differing f-values but the results will be similar. I will do 1:1 sections for that too.  Give me a week or so!

Cheers

I agree at f1.4 it is soft. At f2.0 usable, and from f2.8 very good. But, for some portraits even f1.4 could be useful. Anyway, I think I like this lens most of all my MF lenses. I would like to try f3.5 macro. I saw some examples and they looks great.

It works really fine... the shots look great!

I have a question though, regarding the adapter: is it safe to use one from e-bays (third party) because the ones from Olympus are more expensive than some of the lenses...

Can we still have good results?

Thanks...

Went to the bar down the street to test out the new lens... all wide open (f1.4)

See the same flare in the lower left

This should make for an excellent portrait lens, I prefer portraits to be soft (as in 'soft focus') instead of as sharp as can be, I've never cared for razorsharp skinsurface very much. This does very well as a low light portrait lens, the bokeh is also very nice imo, real classy, this is a winner for sure. Thanks for the samples, loved the pictures from the bar as they are very pleasant to the eyes, silky smooth, forget the flare, it adds character

Oh, I agree, I think its one of my favorite lenses right now, and great for portraits, but since this archive is for letting people know what these lenses do, I think its good to point out the softness and flaring  :)

Question for those that own this....
Do you also plan on getting the 45mm f.8?
